Open Question: Why do midwesterners sit on their front porch and watch cars go by?

I used to live in Wyoming, and I moved to Wisconsin. I see people who just sit on their front porch and watch cars go by. It is kind of weird. I know people grill/entertain/socialize, in the back yard, but the front is kind of weird. I never used to see this in Wyoming or in New Jersey, where a lot of my family lives.
